General remarks
Oval to long-oval tubers with a yellow skin, shallow eyes and yellow flesh. Medium dry matter content, somewhat lower than Bintje. The nitrate-content in the tubers is low. Cooking type AB and no discoloration after cooking. The sugar content is particularly low. Victoria is very suitable for processing (French fries) and for table potatoes in Northwest Europe.
Maturity
Victoria is a medium early / medium late maturing variety with a medium early tuberisation.
Seed treatment
Victoria has a long dormancy period. A heat treatment might be useful. Pre-sprouting is not necessary, Victoria can be planted with small white buds.
Fertilisation
The Nitrogen needed is the same as Bintje (ca. 250 kg. N/ha. including soil supply). A divided gift is advised. Basic application 150 kg N/ha.
A good Potassium supply is desired (ca. 10% higher as Bintje). Avoid Potassium-chloride in spring because it depresses the dry matter content. Use a potash fertilizer with a low chlorine content.

Cultivation
Victoria can be grown both on clay and sandy soils.
Depending on soil type and seed size the following planting densities are recommended when grown for the Frech Fries industry:
28 - 35 mm: ± 50.000 plants/ha. Planting distance 26 cm
35 - 50 mm: ± 38.000 plants/ha. Planting distance 35 cm
50 - 60 mm (cut): ± 40.000 plants/ha. Planting distance 33 cm
When grown for the fresh table potato production, the distance between the plants can be 8 - 10 cm more narrow. Do not plant too deep, because the tubers grow somewhat deep and dispersed in the ridge.
The herbicide Sencor has no negative effect on Victoria. Rather slow emergence, but lateron a good foliage development. Average number of tubers per plant with a high yield. The resistance to late blight (Phytophthora infestans) is reasonably good, however regular preventive treatments against this disease are necessary.
Harvest
Victoria has a rather good resistance to mechanical damage and bruising. After haulm killing, the tuber skin must be set to prevent mechanical damage. Harvest sufficient deep to prevent cut seed. During harvest and storage the dropping heights must be reduced to the minimum. If the crop is mature and lifted with care, harvest does not cause problems.
Storage
The variety has a rather long dormancy and good qualities for storage.
When the product has to be stored for a longer period it is advised to use sprout inhibitors.
The reducing sugar content is very low, the variety can be stored for long periods without problems.
The storage characteristics can be compared to Bintje. Keep the temperature constant and not below 6°C, to maintain the processing quality. Ventilate regularly. A heat treatment at the end of storage and before processing is advised to avoid problems of bruising and damage.
Resistance to diseases
Resistant to potato cyst nematodes (Ro1) and wart disease race 1. Victoria has a good resistance to second growth. Victoria has a reasonable resistance to late blight (Phytophthora infestans) in the foliage and is good resistance to tuber blight.
