General remarks
Cicero is a table potato variety with beautiful oval to long-oval tubers. Good quality, cooking type B, fairly firm texture and no discoloration after cooking. Good storability and suitable for pre-packing in Europe. Also suitable for organic production.
Maturity
Medium early / medium late.
Seed treatment
Cicero has a good dormancy. A good seed treatment before planting is recommended. A heat treatment might be necessary. Cicero can be planted with small white buds. Sometimes pre-sprouting can be useful, then the seed tubers should be well ventilated and exposed to daylight and to rather low temperatures to get strong sprouts. Cicero is somewhat susceptible for sprout damage and therefore the tubers should be planted carefully.
Fertilisation
Requires an average N-fertilisation, comparable to Spunta. A divided dose is recommended.
Cultivation
Suitable for all kind of soils. A normal planting distance and depth can be used during planting. Cicero seems to be slightly susceptible to Sencor. This variety has a rather rapid emergence and early development, covering the soil well in a later stage. Although Cicero has a good resistance to late blight, early and regular treatments against Phytophthora are recommended to avoid an infection.
Harvest
This variety is hardly susceptible to internal bruising and slightly susceptible to mechanical damage. If the tubers are lifted with care, harvest does not need to cause problems.
Storage
Cicero has a good dormancy, is hardly susceptible to Fusarium and stores very well.
Resistance to diseases
Resistant to potato cyst nematodes Ro1 + Ro4 (A). Fairly resistant to foliage blight and almost resistant to tuber blight. Good resistant to PVY. Somewhat susceptible to common scab.
